26 SUMMER LEARNING © | Teacher Created Materials 931983—Summer Scholars: Language Arts Management Guide 13 Overview Phonics and Word Study Phonics and word study provides a crucial component to any language arts curriculum. Phonics teaching in general has proven to be important in the teaching of reading (Wyse and Bradbury 2022). The research-based phonics and word study units in Summer Scholars are easy to implement, simple to differentiate, and adaptable to any instructional model. The activities are straightforward and engaging. The units also boost students’ spelling, vocabulary, and decoding skills by familiarizing them with common phonics patterns in a logical, sequential format. Each three-day unit explores a different phonics concept or phonetic pattern. Goals of Phonics and Word Study The first goal of phonics and word study is to build students’ familiarity with common patterns and rules. The scope and sequence of the units has been designed using a developmental approach, considering students’ predictive stages of phonemic awareness and understanding. Units progress from basic letter sounds to challenging phonetic patterns and spiral from each year to the next. A second goal is to strengthen decoding skills. When students spend time immersed in a particular phonetic pattern, they start to notice and apply the pattern to their daily reading. Each phonics and word study unit’s emphasis on common spelling patterns strengthens students’ word-attack skills and helps them break large words into syllables and meaningful chunks. Vocabulary development is the third, and perhaps most critical, goal. Tasks are meaning-based, so students cannot complete them successfully without some knowledge of the words’ definitions or parts of speech. Additionally, activities are designed to deepen students’ knowledge of targeted words by requiring them to manipulate synonyms, antonyms, and multiple meanings. How the Activities Work There are eight three-day units of phonics and word study in the Summer Scholars curriculum. Each unit revolves around a particular phonetic pattern and includes five separate activities. They include whole group, collaborative, and independent work time. Activities vary throughout each unit. In the units, students will explore long and short vowels, digraphs and blends, diphthongs, silent and soft letters, r-controlled vowels, contractions, word endings, and the schwa sound. Students apply these patterns to one- and two-syllable words and explore vowel teams. Common prefixes, suffixes, and homophones are studied as well.
