Weather can take many forms. On a sunny day, the sky can be filled with fluffy clouds. But during a storm, the water in the air can quickly turn into rain, hail, or a flurry of snowflakes. A cool breeze can feel refreshing on a hot day. But wind can become wild and dangerous in a hurricane or a tornado. The weather is constantly changing. It’s always a good idea to check the weather forecast. This way you can be prepared. When the weather is extreme, you must make smart choices. If a tornado is coming, seek shelter. Try to get underground as fast as possible. If a hurricane is coming, you may need to evacuate. This means you leave your home. Go somewhere safe where the storm will not affect you. If a dust storm is coming, it is best to stay inside, away from the dust. And if a blizzard is coming, stay indoors where it is warm. If you are prepared, you can handle any weather Mother Nature may throw your way! But it did not. It was not long before another world war broke out. World War II was even worse than World War I. Raymond Weeks was a veteran. He had fought in World War II. He wanted to change Armistice Day to Veterans Day. He felt that all veterans should be honored. He wanted to make Veterans Day a national holiday. Other leaders thought this was a good idea. President Dwight Eisenhower (AHY-zuhn-hou-er) did, too! He was also a veteran. In 1954, he signed a bill that made Veterans Day a national holiday. General Eisenhower speaks with soldiers during World War II. The U.S. entered World War II after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941. Dwight D. Eisenhower 14 15 Let’s Learn!
