Newton, Ph.D. Professor Emeritus of Classics at Kent State University I love the notion that Building Vocabulary is respectful of teachers’ time constraints. Moreover, it takes advantage of the notion of spaced instruction. Instead of cramming an entire lesson into one long and tedious time period, Building Vocabulary spreads instruction out over the course of a week, using different activities so that students can examine the targeted word patterns from a variety of different perspectives. Finally, I find that the use of actual and authentic texts involves students in real reading, not just a list of words to be learned. Moreover, with younger children, we have created delightful poems for each word family that will not only lead to greater word knowledge but also promote fluent reading, an often neglected but critical part of the reading curriculum. I am especially happy with how Building Vocabulary supports teachers and engages students. Through a variety of games and activities, students will enjoy a sense of mastery as they ‘Divide and Conquer’ and ‘Combine and Create’ word parts. They will learn to ‘flex vocabulary’ by changing suffixes to generate multiple words from a single root. The Student Guided Practice Book graphics present an age-appropriate array of images from building and construction, underlining the theme that we ‘build’ vocabulary as we learn. I wish my teachers had had this program when I was a kid! Dr. Tim Rasinski was fully aware that much of English is based on Greek and Latin roots.
